Cool-warm water facility approved at Wyoming State hatchery

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission has approved the department’s proposed cool-warm water facility at Dan Speas Hatchery. 

The Dan Speas Fish Hatchery—located at Speas Road, in the City of Casper, United States—was originally constructed in 1957 and an expansion and renovation ​​project started in 2005.

The facility will provide the ability to rear cool-warm water game fish such as walleye and channel catfish in Wyoming. Species previously raised at Speas include fall spawn rainbow, Eagle Lake Rainbow, firehole rainbow, Snake River Cutthroat, brook, and brown trout.

“The Speas Hatchery has been essential to the success of our statewide stocking program for decades,” said Commissioner John Masterson.

Masterson said the department provided the commission with a comprehensive plan for its expansion that will protect Wyoming’s waters.

The expansion aims to reduce the risk of aquatic invasive species from being incidentally introduced through fish importation and also meet angler expectations.
