Concordia campus hatchery approved in Wisconsin State

Concordia University, Wisconsin, together with a private company, is proposing to build a commercial fish farm on its campus in Mequon.

Mequon Planning Commission approved Mayer Helminiak Architects’ request for a conditional use grant and building and site plan approval for the 15,000-square-foot hatchery during the Sept. 18 meeting.

The proposed hatchery will be located at 12800 N. Lake Shore Drive, Wisc., United States.

According to a report from News Graphic, the two-storey will be comprised of large tanks used for breeding and growing walleye fish to fingerling size which will later be sold for the purpose of stocking lakes or to larger production facilities that grow fish to food size. 

“We are incredibly excited to see this project move forward — it has been a passion project for us, especially Mark Schmitz, our very talented fish biologist, and myself, from a CU Ventures perspective,” said Dan Sem, president of CU Ventures.

The building will be located near the north end of campus, which is zoned for agricultural use and is within walking distance of faculty members who work at the Center for Environmental Stewardship. It will be open 24 hours.

Students who help in running the commercial fish farm will gain internship and lab experiences, as part of their applied learning experiences in classes and certificate programs from the university.
