Tiny Pacific nation achieves first milkfish spawning

September 21, 2013  By Matt Jones

A news agency from Taipei reports that a Taiwanese technical mission is helping the tiny Pacific island nation of Kiribati develop techniques for raising milkfish.

The agency reports that the mission first achieved success in getting milkfish to spawn naturally last year, giving it a major breakthrough in the area of fry cultivation and leading to the establishment of techniques for mass culture of the species.

Close to 100,000 milkfish fry per year are expected to be raised, to be supplied to Kiribati’s outlying islands for restoration of marine resources.

The Republic of Kiribati is an island nation in the central tropical Pacific Ocean with  an area of 800 square kms (310 sq miles).
