Norway’s Scanship takes water treatment tech to Scotland

Scanship has been contracted by recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) provider Billund Aquaculture to provide the technology for sludge handling as part of the wastewater treatment process in the RAS design for Scottish Sea Farms’ new land-based freshwater smolt facility in Barcaldine, Scotland, according to Scanship.

Once operational, the hatchery will have capacity to produce between 2.000- and 3.000-ton smolt per year. The Scanship installation portion of the project will be completed in November 2018.

“With this contract we are moving our aquaculture business outside Norway,” said Scanship CEO Henrik Badin in a statement. “We are thrilled to contribute with our sustainable solutions for aquaculture in Scotland. With our technology offered, we will not only reduce pollution to sea but also open up for circular economy concepts on the industry offsets of valuable nutrients.”
