The Portuguese micro-algae culture firm Necton SA recently released a culture medium product for hatchery managers to kick start their own microalgae production systems in-house.
NutriBloom is based on the culture medium Necton’s researchers developed to grow their proprietary microalgae product line.
“Some customers have their own way of doing things, making their own recipes of microalgae, and they don’t want to change their practices,” said Nekton’s microalgae business manager Victoria Del Pino. “We asked, ‘how can we help them do their jobs better?’ We know how to grow microalgae because of our own culture medium so we developed a product based on that.”
NutriBloom is a formulated mix of macro and micronutrients, trace elements and vitamins for growing microalgae out-of-the-box. The shelf life of NurtiBloom is one year. Within the aquaculture hatchery sector, the company sells microalgae to fish, shrimp, and shellfish larviculture businesses and research institutions.
Necton’s microalgae collection is composed of nearly 30 different strains with 20 marine species and 10 freshwater species. Among the various microalgae genera, the company is capable of producing Nannochloropsis, Tetraselmis, Isochrysis, Phaeodactylum, Porphyridium, Neochloris, Botryococcus, and Chlorella among others.
Based in Olhao, Portugal, in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, Necton S.A was established in 1997. In addition to the microalgae production operation, the company also operates another enterprise – the Salt Business Unit – harvesting sea salt from nearby marshes.
