October 14, 2020  By Hatchery International staff

Orkney Shellfish Hatchery, part of the Cadman Capital Group’s aquaculture division, has successfully cultured its first run of native flat oysters on land, with plans to increase production of the species imminently.

The hatchery, which is located on the pristine waters of Orkney, Scotland, announced its plans for native flat oyster production in August, with the expectation that its pilot run would complete later this year.

“Here at the Cadman Capital Group, we are excited about the quick success of our operations at Orkney Shellfish Hatchery. We are very proud of the efforts and dedication that our hatchery team has contributed to ensure the success of our pilot production of Native Flat Oysters. In addition, the bio-security measures they have put in place has ensured the quality of the produce, setting our oysters apart from others in the market and making them ideal for restoration efforts,” said Dr. Nik Sachlikidis, managing director of the Cadman Capital Group’s aquaculture division.

In addition to the production of native flat oysters, last month, the hatchery announced that it is also on course for the on-land production of clawed lobsters, as it moves towards its goal of becoming a premium, multi-species aquaculture hatchery.

More than just a commercial shellfish production facility, Orkney Shellfish Hatchery is committed to the efficient and sustainable practise of cultivating shellfish on land, in order to replenish the UK’s seafood stocks, as well as support the global aquaculture industry, the company said.

With a clear sustainability agenda at the forefront of its operations, the hatchery team is actively looking to speak with anyone involved in oyster restoration projects in the UK and beyond, it added.

Orkney Shellfish Hatchery is a multi-species aquaculture hatchery designed to provide premium seafood products including oyster spat, European lobster, microalgae and nutritional solutions to the aquaculture industry.
