Researchers test vaccine delivery by nasal passage

A paper published in Vaccine scientific journal early this year reports on trials conducted on the efficacy of nasal route vaccination against two aquatic diseases: infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNv), and enteric red mouth (ERM) disease. The vaccines were administered to rainbow trout.

         The paper was co-authored by a team of four from Clear Springs Foods in Idaho, the Center for Evolutionary and Theoretical Immunology in the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, also at the UNM in Albuquerque.

         The paper notes that data derived from the study shows dual vaccination against two different pathogens using the trout’s nasal passages is “a very effective vaccination strategy for use in aquaculture, particularly when each nare is used separately during delivery.”
