Aquaculture ramps up in Middle East

October 11, 2014  By Bonnie Waycott

Rising per-capita seafood consumption in the Gulf Coast Countries’ (GCC) trading union of nations will likely be a topic of considerable discussion at the upcoming SEAFEX 2014 trade fair at Dubai in November.

According to a media report from the Middle East region, materials and technology from regional and international aquaculture companies will showcase such things as specially-designed hatcheries planned for the ultra-arid region, and harvesting and processing equipment.

The report notes that according to a report from the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Agriculture has invested at least $10.6 billion in aquaculture projects that are projected to yield around a million tonnes of fish in the next 16 years.

The report says that by 2020 the population of the GCC region (all the Arab states of the Persian Gulf except Iraq) is projected to rise to 53.5 million – all with a growing appreciation for seafood.

In Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, says the report, there is ever increasing investment in aquaculture – the breeding, rearing and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments including ponds, rivers, lakes and the ocean.

Apparently SEAFEX attendees signed up are from 30 countries. The conference is scheduled to be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre November 9-11, 2014.
