New corporation invested in prairie hatchery

Revenue from fish and wildlife licenses will now be administered through the new Saskatchewan Wildlife Assets Management (SWAM) Corporation.

SWAM Corp is a non-government organization put together specifically for the purpose and designed to overcome some of the issues raised by the previous method of handling the development fund’s pods of money.

This is good news for the province’s 100-year old trout hatchery just outside Fort Qu’Appelle.

Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) executive director, Darrell Crabbe says while things are now “fine” at the hatchery, it is a century old and it’s high time there were some upgrades, improvements, efficiencies and cost-cuts, as well as increased fish stocking.

Crabbe said he believes that in addition to the trout and the pike the facility puts out each year, he thinks the hatchery has an untapped capacity to hike the number of walleye.

The management of the hatchery and the determination of its future and direction still remain the responsibility of the provincial Ministry of Environment under minister Scott Moe.

SWAM is “a very invested stakeholder that will now be involved in the day-to-day operations of the fish hatchery.”
