August 22, 2022 By Hatchery International staff
Papua New Guinea’s National Fisheries Authority (NFA) announced the official opening of the country’s first commercial sea cucumber and fish hatchery.
The new Sand fish hatchery officially opened on Aug. 19 as part of the West New Britain provincial government’s Fin Fisheries project. The sea cucumber hatchery will become a hub where sea cucumbers will be bred and some will be for local fish farmers to grow their own stock. NFA presented K500,000 (US$142,000) in funding towards the facility’s operations.
Chinese company Marigold Ltd. has partnered with the West New Britain provincial government to purchase and export. The provincial government will receive 20 per cent for every export made.
