Blue Aqua aims for sustainable food production in Singapore with new trout farm

Blue Aqua has announced it will develop the first high-tech fish farm in Singapore, which will produce trout. This initiative comes as part of Blue Aqua’s intention to grow its aquaculture operations in Singapore, and will invest $45 million Singaporean dollars (US$29 million).
The facility has a planned annual production capacity of 1,200 tons of rainbow trout, which will aim to meet local demand for sustainable, high-quality fish. The operation will include a proprietary ModulRAS system developed by Assentoft Aqua, a Denmark-based company that specializes in land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technologies.
Looking to become self-sufficient in its food production, Singapore has set a goal to meet 30 per cent of its local food production by 2030. The project will couple super-intensive technology with artificial intelligence (AI) to help achieve sustainable fish production and therefore, will support Singapore’s local food security initiatives.
“The future lies in sustainable, smart farming system that are not bound by environmental constraints,” said Farshad Shishehchian, CEO and founder of Blue Aqua International Group. “Blue Aqua has been a strong advocate for super-intensive, species-focused farming since its inception, and we are excited to grow our efforts to develop a scalable aquaculture technology, with farmed trout and shrimp, to serve as an important and efficient protein food source for decades to come.”
Keeping in mind Singapore’s “Green Plan 2030”, which encourages a vibrant sustainability ecosystem, the project will also look into developing green technology for energy and carbon-efficient urban farming through partnerships with clean energy technology firms. The developed sustainable trout farming system will be eventually deployed across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
