Benchmark Genetics enters collaboration with tilapia producer, Regal Springs
November 26, 2021 By Hatchery International Staff

Benchmark Genetics and Regal Springs have entered a long-term strategic collaboration to support Regal Springs’ breeding programs for premium, natural-grown tilapia.
With major operations in Indonesia, Honduras, and Mexico, this agreement will secure Regal Springs’ access to Benchmark’s team of experts and advanced support systems for selective breeding programs, as well as the company’s wide range of experience from 30 programs for 20 species, tilapia being one of its main focus areas.
“We believe that Benchmark Genetics will contribute assisting us in finding solutions to continuously improve our environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, through better health, yield and animal welfare,” expressed Oscar Garay Krogh, global head of farming at Regal Springs.
Currently, tilapia accounts for approximately 10 per cent of the global finfish aquaculture production with almost seven metric tons worldwide.
“We are proud to assist Regal Springs with realizing their ambitious goal for the company’s genetic work,” said Morten Rye, director of genetics at Benchmark Genetics. “In addition to better animal welfare, genetic improvements also will lead to higher production efficiency and reduced costs.”
